Our new home aims for the highest standards of green and sustainable living.
The Stanley Center’s Living Building educates and inspires others to be mindful of the planet and the opportunities for action.
We are currently tracking to be the world’s second building renovation to achieve full Living Building certification from the International Living Future Institute.
Achieving Living Building certification requires innovative solutions and has required a close partnership among Neumann Monson Architects, Graham Construction, the Stanley Center, and our other collaborators. We view this project as a way to live our mission and inspire others locally and globally.

We are thrilled to be opening the Stanley Center’s new home on its path to become a living building. This is a physical manifestation of our values and commitment to sustainability and global peace. We hope that this building will serve as an inspiration for others to embrace sustainable building design and to work toward a more peaceful and just world.

The Stories Behind Our Building
For decades, the former Musser public library building at 304 Iowa Avenue served Muscatine residents as a hub of learning. The Stanley Center has invested more than $14 million in the community by acquiring, renovating, and transforming the space into one of the most environmentally-friendly and ecologically-sustainable buildings in the world to serve as our new home.
President & CEO Keith Porter captures the heart of the living building story saying, “But this really isn’t about us. This is about the people in Muscatine and about future generations, about those in the Meskwaki Nation and about people in places all over the country and beyond that are able to receive from one of the few buildings in the world that is really living, giving more than it’s taking in every aspect of life.”
